The Third Global Forum brought together leading business executives, management scholars, civil society leaders and government policy makers from around the world to identify and to leverage new solutions that have the potential to change the nature of 21st century society. Under the theme Flourish & Prosper, participants explored renewed purpose and radical “net positive” strategies to create greater value for business and society. Over 650 attendees contributed to a new business orientation aimed at helping organizations inspire and engage people in innovative ways. Healthy work spaces and mindful management practices were brainstormed to enable customers and employees to be more authentic, creative, and collaborative. Action plans were developed to assist companies to sustain industry leadership while realizing remarkable relationship value with diverse stakeholders including local communities, governments, nonprofits, and suppliers.

The collective effort over two-and-a-half days led to breakthrough innovation ideas in eight mini-design summit areas. These ranged from agriculture and energy to metrics, the circular economy, cities, consciousness of connectedness and pioneering work on a U.S. Grand Strategy along with a new prizing project to showcase Business as an Agent of World Benefit. The result? Incredible energy and newfound enthusiasm for a business-led effort to create a world in which companies prosper, people excel, and nature thrives.

The New Theory of the Business — Toward Full Spectrum Flourishing.

This track is designed to facilitate, across national boundaries and management disciplines, the emergent new theory of business dialogue within the management sciences and the interdisciplinary domains of constructive human science and organization theory. Including among its participants—each with a powerful contribution to the emerging theory of business--are thought leaders and vanguard models and a myriad of forms that are proliferating.

2

What Do We Know About Change at the Scale of the Whole?

The Global Goals mobilization stands as the largest macro-project in history, dwarfing the collaborations to heal the ozone layer; dwarfing the global eradication of smallpox; dwarfing humankind’s leap to the moon; and dwarfing the re-building of the world economy through the Marshall Plan. Moreover, the Global Goals, as the most epic earthshot macro-project ever, is not so much about solution capacity or scarcity of resources as it is about unlocking heretofore hidden powers of unprecedented collaboration.

3

New Visions of 21st Century Management Education.

Consciousness research is no longer a futuristic mission as it has rapidly and truly entered the fields of leadership development, neuroscience, the study of emotional intelligence, mindfulness in management, as well as “leadership and the new science” with its worldview of fundamental interconnectedness.

The Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative

In 2002, the EFMD (then European Foundation for Management Development) held its annual meeting. The theme was “Global Responsibility” and there was a consensus, especially in the wake of 9/11, that EFMD could and should take action on this vital issue. The GRLI resulted as the first organised relationship between the United Nations and business schools (UNGC & EFMD MOU 2003). In 2004 UNGC & EFMD invited 21 Companies & B-Schools to hands-on address the question of how to develop a generation of globally responsible leaders. This resulted in the 2005 founding call of the GRLI.

Subsequently GRLI played a central role in the development of the Principles and the establishment of the Principles of Responsible Management Education PRME (2006-2007). In 2012, following the impact of the 50+20 vision and GRLI’s pioneering work on Whole Person Learning, AACSB International and EFMD entered into a strategic partnership agreement with the GRLI in terms of which “GRLI will serve as a primary operational arm of AACSB and EFMD in the arena of responsible leadership and sustainability”. The Strategic Partnership agreement with AACSB and EFMD was reset in 2016 to include UNGC and in terms of which GRLI hosts a collaboratory on Responsible Management Education which includes co-facilitation of the PRME Champions.

Today, the GRLI is both a formal partnership of 50 organisations (11 companies, 36 learning institutions and 3 global organisations) and a less formal global community comprising a number of organisations involved informally in communities of responsible action.

Within this we have important strategic partnerships with EFMD and AACSB International as well as the UNGC. We also have a total of 32 alumni organisations that have been involved in the GRLI at one time or another since its inception and are currently not actively engaged (though we maintain informal links with many of the individuals within those organisations).

The GRLI’s vision is:

Global responsibility embedded in leadership and practice of organisations and societies worldwide.

The GRLI’s mission is to catalyse the development of globally responsible leadership and practice in organisations and society worldwide.

Through visible advocacy, thought-and-action leadership, and hands-on prototyping and experimentation the GRLI community works to:

  • Convene, facilitate and foster collaboration amongst actors and actions that hold a shared interest in promoting and developing responsible leadership.
  • Pioneer and prototype new methods for learning and community building.
  • Incubate ideas and initiatives that create impact and that accelerates progress and transformation towards global responsibility.
  • Contribute systemic and integrative thinking to the discourse on responsible leadership in education, research and practice.
  • Promote awareness of global responsibility as the highest order of responsibility and contribute to the realisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability (a.k.a. corporate social responsibility) initiative with 13000 corporate participants and other stakeholders over 170 countries with two objectives: "Mainstream the ten principles in business activities around the world" and "Catalyse actions in support of broader UN goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)". Moving forward, the UN Global Compact and its signatories are deeply invested and enthusiastic about supporting work towards the SDGs.

The UN Global Compact was announced by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in an address to the World Economic Forum on 31 January 1999, and was officially launched at UN Headquarters in New York City on 26 July 2000. The Global Compact Office works on the basis of a mandate set out by the UN General Assembly as an organization that "promotes responsible business practices and UN values among the global business community and the UN System." Case Western Reserve University is known for its world class research, but with more than 200 student organizations, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved outside the classroom, too. The Case Western Spartans varsity teams compete in the Division III University Athletic Association. The Greek system, which stresses a commitment to on-campus and community service, involves about one third of students. The campus is located about 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland, where students have free access to a handful of downtown museums like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. On campus, freshmen live in one of four themed residential communities, which are called Cedar, Juniper, Magnolia and Mistletoe. All students are invited to the annual SpringFest, a collection of music, carnival games and activities that is the largest student-run event on campus.

Case Western Reserve University boasts a broad range of top-rated specialty graduate programs, like its health law curriculum at the School of Law. The university also has renowned offerings in biomedical engineering at the School of Engineering and nonprofit management at the Weatherhead School of Management. In addition to its suburban campus, the school owns University Farm, a 400-acre plot of land about 10 miles from campus where students research and take courses in biology, ecology and art. Notable alumni include former U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich and Craig Newmark, creator and namesake of Web site Craigslist.
